Promoting Your Blog

The How and Why of Promoting Your Blog

There are three main reasons for blogging, there are others but these are the foremost, to supply information, for fun and for an income.

For most bloggers it is really all about the fun. For a few it is all about the income, whether it be through AdSense, paid adverts, affiliate marketing or some other revenue generating source. The most important element for maximizing the success of any blog, for what ever purpose is …. TRAFFIC.

Why? Because the more visitors that visit your blog the more chance those visitors have to click through the adverts in your blog. At this point you may be wondering if there are some basic techniques that you can use to increase traffic and indeed promote your blog.

Hopefully by the time you have read this article you will have some ideas of what is necessary. Ideas on how to participate in message boards, optimizing your blog for those pesky search engines and how to keep your blog interesting.

Active Participation in Message Boards

There are some very basic protocols to using message boards, break them and you will pay in a big way. Do it the right way and you will be using one of the simplest ways to drive traffic to your blog. One must understand thing when using this form of traffic driving, is to avoid breaking the rules of the message board.

Why is it so important? Because some of these boards have very strict regulations regards the use of links to other sites in your posts. If you fail to obey their rules you will pay by being banned and worst of all you will loose any regard other board users may have formed for you and your blog.

If you as a blog owner are actively participating on a board want to avoid what others may consider as spamming then pay careful consideration to the posting of your blog address in a way that can be taken as spam. If others choose to consider your post as spam you have no chance of them visiting your blog.

So, how do you avoid such an outcome, easy? Place your link in your signature and make certain your post content is relevant and informative. Doing so will build your reputation as a knowledgeable contributor and you benefit by enticing other board members to check out your blog.

Optimizing Your Blog

Another element for getting traffic is Search Engine Optimization, needing some real consideration. Optimizing your blog for search engines can be beneficial as improved search engine rankings often lead to increased blog traffic, this traffic by the way is free.

Competition is the only limiting factor to your blog rising through the ranking on the search engine and sometimes is a bit difficult. If your blog is in a very popular subject then it may be difficult indeed. Some blog owners with the finances can and may employ professionals to ensure their ranking success.

Fortunately there are some steps the average blog owner can take to help them climb to a respectable position and they are such steps as good research, using the right keywords and making sure their blog title has those words in there.

Meta tags and image tags are also of value but what ever happens do not get sucked into using black hat methods, you will sooner or later get penalized by the search engines and all your effort will have been in vain.

Keeping Your Blog Interesting

I have kept this last little piece till last as I want it to really get into your mind. There is no point in putting in the effort to building and hosting a blog if you do not intend to keep up with it. By that I mean update it regularly and making the content interesting.

The more interesting the blog the more likely it will attract traffic, both return traffic and new traffic. Return readers will be looking for new posts and the interest they have will result in their recommendation to their friends. There is nothing better than word of mouth advertising.

Once one recommends a site to someone they in turn will pass it on and the old power of two takes over. There is some debate over whether to stay on one subject or to post lots of different articles on several topics; the decision here is really up to you.

Be adventurous and give ita try, you never know just how successful you may be with your little venture.
